Today are back in my jade, or should I say jades
0:06
I nearly killed this tree three times and that ended up with me having to split the tree in half and now I've got two of them
0:13
But as you can see they're growing pretty well. They're kind of crazy growing this little pot together
0:19
I'll deal with that problem later. Right now over winter though they're not really doing much
0:23
But if we're bringing in closer, you'll see something pretty interesting. This jade has actually grown some aerial roots
0:29
aerial roots and even has a little tree grown from the trunk. I've not seen this
0:36
happen before so I've no idea if it's normal but it's pretty cool. It does live
0:41
next to my little phicus which is some crazy aerial roots so the pair of them
0:46
are clearly enjoying themselves and have plenty of humanity. In February, it's time to make a choice of these two
1:02
I'm going to separate them out and keep one that's potting, keep one as small as possible and basically a little bonsai
1:09
The other one I just going to plant in a larger pot and let it be a house plant So I going to leave one alone for now and then the one I t here I think it has more potential as a bonsai It has already divided a few times some of the branches are quite low down so I think this will be the better option for the one to keep small
1:29
So I'll just prune it back and that was it for now. In March there's not much happening. It just looks a bit strange since I've only been
1:40
prune one of them. But since GHS succulents and not real trees
1:44
it's actually better to repot them when they're actively growing. Which really means the middle of summer
1:50
So I was kind of ignored it for a few months. But you'll start to see
1:56
that the one I did prune started to pop out some new shoots, which is exactly
2:00
what I want to see. I could have probably sort this out in May or June when the
2:10
shoots were actively growing but I sort of dragged my heels a little bit. There's no real rush
2:15
it's all okay. In July I thought it was a good time to finally separate these two out They are getting a little crowd in there
2:40
Started by just trying to rake some of the top layer of soil off to try and loosen things up
2:44
It's pretty compressed since there's two trees in there and they're both growing very aggressively
2:49
I'm expecting this root ball to be pretty solid. But it actually came out pretty easily
2:54
Lucky the shape of this pot. was pretty good so it was able to slide out easy enough but it is a little brick of roots so we need to
3:02
try and loosen up and get these two trees separated the drainage screen came out pretty easily
3:07
so that's a good sign and then just raked away some soil which actually seemed to take a lot of
3:15
roots with it after a while I was able to pull the two trees apart
3:25
So here's the big one that I'm going to plant up and leave alone
3:29
There's really not a lot of roots on it which is quite scary
3:33
But I'm not going to rake anymore, I'm just going to keep it. Just try to save what I've got here
3:39
So here the smaller one I got most of soil off It not the worst root ball it fairly flat 4j it probably actually pretty good So now I just get it put it back up into the same pot
3:53
Here we are a few weeks later in August. I've got some stones to help keep it in position
4:10
in position, as it's a little top-heavy and could easily topple over
4:15
I'm just going to follow the process of this one from now on, then maybe in a few years' time I'll bring the other one back in and compare them both
4:21
But from now we'll just worry about keeping this one small. In October it's looking okay. You can see there's plenty of new growth
4:35
It's all pretty small. So I'll now just let this grow out and then trim it back when it needs it
4:39
and we'll just see where it ends up. Here we are now where it's slowed down for the year
4:45
But I'm happy enough so far off it. Thanks for watching, see you next time
